Patek Philippe closed 2020 in a big way with the launch of the Grande Sonnerie ref. 6301P-001 in November. The most complicated wristwatch unveiled by the Geneva watchmaker in recent years, the Grande Sonnerie is a grande and petite sonnerie carillon, widely regarded as the ultimate achievement in watchmaking due to the sheer mechanical complexity of the complication. A grande sonnerie is able to strike the hours and quarters as they pass and also 
function as a minute repeater, able to sound the hours, quarters, and minutes on demand. To do this, it requires a movement with at least 600 to 700 components, making it significantly more complicated than even the most intricate time-only movements.
The ref. 6301P-001 is a modern take on vintage Patek Philippe designs, featuring classical elements like recessed case bands and luminous hands, but with a contemporary movement. The GS 36-750 PS IRM movement is derived from the Grandmaster Chime and features silicon components for the hairspring and jumping-seconds mechanism. The watch is finished to a high 
standard, revealing details that put it in a class above most other Patek Philippe complicated watches. The bridges are carefully shaped, allowing for more elaborate finishing, and the watch is able to chime loudly and clearly in pleasing tones.
Patek Philippe has a long history with the grande sonnerie, having produced pocket watch versions in the early 20th century. The ref. 6301P-001 is the 
company’s first grande sonnerie wristwatch and represents a significant achievement for the brand. It is a limited edition, with reportedly only a few available in each region. It has a price tag of around $1.2 million, making it a
highly exclusive and expensive timepiece. Despite this, it has been well received by collectors and watch enthusiasts, who appreciate its impressive complications and high level of craftsmanship.
